dates magazine by PERJUS

Each issue of dates magazine is a collection of images all created on the same date by different people, published on the same calendar day in the future. The result is a record of overlap and contrast. It’s not so much about the passage of time but rather how a collection of people saw the world on a specific day.

Contributors are invited to review what already exists in their camera roll or hard drives.

zero curation, no theme, no planning, no premeditation.

dates magazine issue #1: “January 31, 2025”

The idea behind dates is simple: one day, and a collection of images curated from people all over the world.

Each issue centers on a single calendar date and brings together photographs and videos captured on that day, without coordination or long-term intention. The images are published exactly one year later, allowing chance, overlap, and contrast to do the work. There is no theme. Just the day.

about issue #1

material creation date: January 31, 2025
release date: January 31, 2026

Contributors were invited to review what was already existing in their camera roll or hard drives.

The first issue of dates gathers original images taken on January 31, 2025, using any camera. Cellphone photography is central to the project, alongside film and digital work. Screenshots of original media captured that day, including text conversations, also appear.

The result is a document of parallel lives unfolding at the same moment in time.

editorial approach

dates is not concerned with polish, aesthetics, or technical perfection. Image quality varies. Subjects range from the mundane to the intimate. What matters is when the image was made, not how it looks.

Self-portraits appear selectively, balanced against images of people, places, objects, animals, meals, and moments of pause. The layout is minimal and image-first, allowing each photograph to exist without explanation.

format and availability

dates is available exclusively as a printed publication. Each copy is printed to order via MagCloud. There is no digital edition.

The magazine is published through PERJUS and lives independently as dates magazine.

Issue #1 features a curated group of contributors selected by Alaina Latona, spanning different locations, backgrounds, and walks of life.

about dates

dates is an offshoot of PERJUS that moves in the opposite direction of traditional editorial intention. Where PERJUS is built on curated photo shoots, creative direction, and planned storytelling, dates is created from moments captured spontaneously, without an audience in mind.

Each issue reflects what people record when they aren’t trying to say something. The interest emerges only later, through proximity and time.

PERJUS reflects how artists choose to present themselves. dates reflects what people capture when they aren’t thinking about being seen.
